Born and raised in eastern Nebraska, I used to think that the prairies were
nothing but a barrier to overcome on the way to the mountains. In my younger
days, my leisure time was spent hiking and climbing in the majestic Rockies, and
I was always in a hurry to put the "desolation of the plains" in my rearview
mirror on a trip out west. How unfortunate that in my youthful haste I neglected
to enjoy some magnificent jewels along the way. With age and maturity, I've
grown to appreciate the beauty of my home state.
The prairie is not a place to experience from a distance, although the wide open
spaces are part of the allure. To do them justice and to allow them into your
soul you must venture forth from the road, get off the interstate and highways
and on to gravel. So that's what I've been doing lately. I wander, exploring the
folds in the hills, listening to what the wind has to say. As I walk in prairie
grasses, my mind is carried away to a place of peaceful bliss far from man-made
noise and distractions we humans seem destined to endure in our daily lives.
